Karen Lewis is the Early Intervention (EIP) Teacher at Eastside Elementary School in Senoia. She has spent the last 16 ½ years teaching at Eastside.

Why did you become a teacher?

In my college chemistry class, I had to explain what microorganisms were to children. I enjoyed it and decided to go into education.

What is the best part about teaching at Eastside Elementary?

The community feeling and environment we have here. I can really relate to the students who difficulty learning because I had a hard time learning to read as a child. I remember the teachers who helped me. I feel like one of my roles is to build their self-esteem - to feel that they’re important and that they matter.

What do you do when you’re not teaching?

Antiquing. My husband does it, too. Scrapbooking, couponing, shopping.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

I would likely have gone into being a school psychologist, counselor, or gone into social services.

What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

To build their self-confidence, so they have a foundation to feel like they can succeed.
