Elizabeth Terrell and Jodi Brooks, third and fifth grade, Brooks Elementary School

Elizabeth Terrell and Jodi Brooks are teachers at Brooks Elementary School. Terrell teaches Gifted Education for First through Fifth grades, and Brooks teaches Third Grade.

1. Why did you become a teacher?

Terrell - From the inspirational teachers I've had growing up. I'm a lifelong lover of learning.

Brooks - I had some teachers in high school who inspired me.

2. What is your favorite part about being a teacher?

Terrell - I love being able to witness the moments of clarity, of truly understanding and grasping. The sharing that goes in the classroom. The thing I love most about teaching is the fact that, as the REACH teacher, I get to have students for several years. It is such a joy for me to watch them grow mentally, emotionally, and physically during their time at Brooks. I enjoy establishing bonds with my students and their parents that last throughout their elementary career.

Brooks - No two days are the same. It never gets boring.

3. If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

Terrell - I could see myself possibly being a nurse, caring for others, assisting and nurturing others. I think I would also like to work for the airlines or be a travel agent because I love to travel.

Brooks - Forensic scientist. I have always been fascinated by that. I taught science in middle school.

4. What do you do for fun?

Terrell - Spend time with my family. I like to read, and I like watching football.

Brooks - Spend lots of time at the baseball park with my son. I enjoy reading and hiking.

5. What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

Terrell - Just to be a caring citizen. I try to promote empathy. Be aware of their surroundings and others. I promote classroom community and caring for one another and remind them to take care of each other.

Brooks - Just to never stop learning. It's not learning to make a grade or earn a reward, but to better yourself as a person.
