WGTC Adult Ed volunteer workshops set

by Celia Shortt

West Georgia Technical College's Adult Education division is holding two workshops for those interested in becoming volunteers and learning strategies for working with adult learners.

The first workshop is on Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at WGTC's Coweta Campus off Turkey Creek Road south of Newnan.

It is an introductory session, giving volunteers an overview of the WGTC Adult Education Program and how volunteers are utilized in the program.

Participants will get some insight into working with adult learners as well as learning useful strategies and resources to use when working with individual learners in the classroom.

The second workshop focuses on strategies for teaching adults to read.

Adult learners who struggle with basic reading skills present a special challenge to volunteer tutors. This workshop will offer hands-on activities which can be used immediately with students. Participants will leave with tools and strategies helpful to working with low level learners. It will be held on Nov. 7 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at WGTC's Coweta Campus.

For both workshops, make reservations with Dianne McConnell, Adult Education: Dianne.mcconnell@westgatech. edu or call 770-755-7855.

WGTC Adult Education offers morning, afternoon and evening classes to adults needing basic education skills. Most of the students in Adult Education classes are preparing to take the GED test. Volunteers support the program's efforts by raising community awareness of the program, providing clerical support, or tutoring students in the classroom.

Some volunteers may be needed to work with an adult learner one-on-one outside of the classroom.

Each volunteer applicant is asked to attend an orientation workshop to learn more about working with adult learners.
