Bob Lutz teaches eighth grade science at Madras Middle School. This year is his eighteenth year teaching.

Why did you become a teacher?

When I was in the general workforce, I worked all the time. It was frustrating how few skills the people under me had. So, I thought I could incorporate those skills into students as a teacher.

What did you do before teaching?

I was in swine production and raised pigs. I was manager at one of the world’s largest hog farms.

What is your favorite part of teaching?

When I see that light bulb turn on - the “ah ha” moment, especially when it’s really an abstract concept.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?

If I could do it all over again, I’d look into engineering or a veterinary science. I always wanted to be a veterinarian.

What do you do for fun?

Hunting - deer and turkey, fishing, camping, outdoor activities

Do you have a family?

I have two children in college. The youngest is the starting kicker at Georgia State. The older one wants to be a teacher, but more so wants to be a coach. My wife is the principal at Canongate Elementary. She made me come to her class while I was doing my career change to see if I really wanted to do it.

What is the one thing you want to tell students?

Try to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and find the connection outside of these walls.
