Local schools attempt to break world reading record

Blake Stewart, a member of the Newnan High School Literacy Enrichment Class, reads 'Otis' by Loren Long to Kaylie Green and Ryan Hughes, first-grade students at Atkinson Elementary, during Read for the Record.

Newnan High School students and teachers visited Atkinson Elementary School recently in an effort to help in breaking the world record for Read for the Record.

In partnership with the Pearson Foundation, the reading program brings together millions of Americans to celebrate literacy in an effort to break the world record of the number of participants reading the same book on the same day.

Newnan High School students read the book 'Otis' by Loren Long to over 450 students in 23 classrooms. Atkinson Elementary has partnered with Newnan High this year to increase the reading achievement for students at both schools.

Pairing teens with younger students has been helpful for struggling readers in both the elementary and the high school. With the partnering of participating Newnan High School students and the assistance of the NHS Future Educators of America (FEA), all Atkinson students were able to participate in breaking the world record.

One fourth grade class at Atkinson included a Skype session in the media center, allowing a REACH classroom at Elm Street to join in.

Jumpstart's Read for the Record and its founding partner, the Pearson Foundation, is a nation-wide campaign that brings together millions. Last year, about 2.3 million people across the country participated and broke the record.
