Allison Hurston: Ninth grade biology, Newnan High

by Celia Shortt

Allison Hurston

How long have you been a teacher?

This is my sixth year of teaching.

Why did you want to become a teacher?

When I was younger, teachers were very influential in my life. They helped me overcome a lot. I've always loved school, and it seemed very natural.

What do you do when you're not teaching?

I coach cheerleading and soccer when I am not teaching or attending grad school. I also spend time with my family and I take biology-related trips in the summer. I really enjoy the trips and bring them back to the classroom.

Do you have a family?

I've been married to my husband, John, for four years this summer. He is an Instructional Specialist in College Park.

What is your favorite part of teaching?

The interactions with the students and really getting to know them on a more personal level. They're cool kids. I love the content of biology as well. I'm a self-proclaimed biology nerd. I like to portray this aspect of myself accurately to my students to teach them the importance of embracing who you are.

If you weren't teaching, what would you be doing?

I would either be a embryologist or a geneticist, pursuing research.

What is your favorite movie(s)?

'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' 'The Sandlot'
