Shiffert to study in China

Maggie Shiffert, a rising senior at Northgate High School in Newnan, Ga., who is also dual enrolled at Clayton State University, has been awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarship for the summer of 2013.

The NSLI-Y program is funded by the U.S. State Department and provides meritbased scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.

Shiffert will use her NSLI-Y scholarship to study Chinese in Chengdu, Sichuan, China during the months of July and August 2013. The scholarship covers all program costs including travel, tuition, academic preparation, testing, educational and cultural activities, orientations, meals, and accommodations with a host family. While living and attending school in Chengdu, Shiffert will also serve as an unofficial representative of Clayton State and the University's Loch Shop, taking the University's name (and a few gifts) to southwest China.

'I'm really excited to be able to learn about Chinese culture and the language, and I can't wait for the adventures that I'm going to have while I'm inChina,' says Shiffert, who is a native of Longyan in the Fujian Province of China.
