Coweta Charter Academy is expanding its campus with a renovation of its current building and a new building for the 2013-14 school year, which will increase class offerings and enrollment.

'Last year, we had 245 kids in kindergarten through fifth grade,' said Coweta Charter Academy Principal Tiffany Pollock. 'We will have 660 kids this year in kindergarten through sixth grade.'

Three years ago when the school started, it had students in kindergarten through second grade and added third grade later that school year. Since that time it has expanded to kindergarten through sixth grade with plans to expand to eighth in the next few years.

'We are adding seventh grade next year with an additional 100 students and hope to add eighth grade the year after,' said Pollock.

'The goal is to fill up with 860 kids. It's huge!'

The original building held 11 just classrooms.

The new building will bring the classroom total to 29.

It will also bring a science lab, art room, expanded cafeteria, Spanish classroom, designated areas for Title 1, gifted students, and the speech/ language pathologist.

State-of-the-art technology and new computers are also being added throughout both areas.

Pollock is excited for this growth and what it means to the community and the students, and is working to keep the heart of the school the same.

'I hope that we can continue to meet the needs of all our children with the variety of educational experiences that we offer and that we will continue to have the small family experience even though we are growing,' she said.

In February, the school's charter was renewed for five years and, currently, the five year plan for the school is to add eighth grade. According to Pollock, the school has always wanted to expand but the expansion needed to be done correctly.

With the new building, the school can continue growing its enrollment and course offerings.

'To do things well, you have to do them one step at a time,' said Pollock.

'Our charter was approved in February for five years. The five-year plan is for eighth grade. The renovation and new building will take us there.'

Coweta Charter Academy has been leasing its facilities from a church. Recently, it purchased the facilities and the property from the church and has plans for more expansion in the current church building, including making the sanctuary a partial gym.

Other plans include offering both vocal and instrumental music components this year for the students.

Coweta Charter Academy is a tuition-free public charter school educating students in grades K-6 who live in Coweta County and is a member of the Charter Schools (CSUSA) family of schools.
