Northgate students 'continuing the American legacy'

He was identified as a special education and at-risk student early in his life, but Keith L. Brown had a message for Northgate High School students: Those traits that label you early on can turn into the very characteristics that make you a successful adult.
Brown was a special guest speaker at Northgate’s recent Black History Month celebration, where the motivational speaker – who said he “talked too much, was too hyper and wanted to give all the answers” as a child – explained how those tendencies have translated into a career as a respected educational consultant and speaker.
“Not impossible – I’m possible,” Brown said, using his catchphrase to emphasize the celebration’s theme, “Be the First: Continuing the American Legacy.”
Brown, who was introduced by NGHS junior Benton Washington was part of the high school’s annual program honoring the contributions of African-Americans throughout history. Northgate students play a huge role in the event, performing in musical acts, tributes, skits and speeches.
Junior Cole Johnson welcomed the crowd after the traditional presentation of colors and Pledge of Allegiance by Northgate’s Air Force JROTC, and featured student performers included Caitlyn Campbell, Nicholas Emory, Suzi Jones, Tori Vinson and Doug Williams.
