East Coweta High School junior Faith Strickland, who was one of 50 students across the state chosen to serve on State School Superintendent John Barge’s 2012-2013 Student Advisory Council, was recognized for her accomplishment by the Coweta County Board of Education at its November meeting.
ECHS Principal Evan Horton introduced Strickland to board members.
“Faith was one of only 50 students chosen state-wide, so that’s quite an accomplishment,” Horton. “We’re proud of her at East Coweta.”
More than 750 students from 121 districts applied to be on the council. Members were chosen on the strength of their application essays.
Members of the council will advise Barge on how state policies are having an impact in the classroom, as well as other education-related issues, and will serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors in their respective schools.
“The Student Advisory Council allows me to hear directly from students in our schools and discuss major initiatives with them,” Barge said. “The Council also gives students the opportunity to share with me their ideas and concerns, which we can use to shape future state policies.”
