Coweta County’s Central Educational Center recently hosted the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project, designed to teach students and communities about the sun.
Stephen Ramsden, who founded the project in 2008, provided students with hands-on experience viewing the sun through special telescopes specifically designed for this use.
He spoke to the students not only about the sun, but also for their need to emphasize STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) studies in school.
The Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project takes observatory-quality telescopes and cameras to regional schools and festivals or events to teach about the sun’s features.
The project concentrates on the sun’s affect on weather, aviation, communications and the environment.
Ramsden reaches approximately 50,000 people at more than 70 events per year through the nonprofit 501(c)(3) project. For more information, visit www.charliebates.org .
