Certified Literate is Coweta’s Key (CLICK) held volunteer tutor training at Central Educational Center recently, giving eight volunteers an opportunity to learn skills and techniques that will assist them in working effectively with adult learners who have low literacy levels.
“This training provided a great opportunity for the CLICK volunteers to gain additional tutoring skills that will assist them when they work with adult learners,” said Lisa Johnston, executive director of CLICK. “We want to do our part to help our students reach their potential.”
Training was conducted by Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta, an accredited ProLiteracy organization established in 1986
Instructor Julie McKenna led the session, and those attending were provided with materials and resources they will use while assisting with adult education GED and ESL classes at the WGTC Coweta campus.
CLICK volunteers also learned skills they will use during one-on-one tutoring.
“There is a real need for many adults in Coweta to gain basic literacy skills to allow them to be more productive and self-sufficient,” Johnston said. “Many adult learners who struggle with reading and writing have set personal goals for themselves. Some adults want to learn how to read the Bible better, or learn how to read so they can help their children with homework. Some contact CLICK for help with filling out a job application.”
