The Summer Focus program in Luthersville had great participation during the school break – providing area youngsters with learning opportunities and keeping skills sharp for another year in the classroom.
The program has been sponsored for six years by the American Union Relief Society. Local churches, volunteers and other organizations joined with AURS to serve meals and provide activities.
Groups made apple pizzas with apple slices, peanut butter, marshmallows and raisins. Vivian Gay said the most fun part was putting “a pretty marshmallow” on her pizza.
Jared Tyler presented a devotional in the morning, showing apples of different types and explaining that God made them all. He said God made different kinds of people – with all kinds of different characteristics – as well.
“He makes us all in His image,” Tyler said.
The different types of apples were also part of several activities, and youngsters received a booklet with educational information and games related to apples.
Making apple smoothies was a favorite activity for many. The day also included other facets of Summer Focus including breakfast, lunch, Uno card games and an outdoor kickball game.
Summer Focus was held at Luthersville City Hall, as it has been for several years.
