Why are the arts so vital to our community?

I believe that exposure to the arts, especially for young people, can literally change the way we perceive the world.

Great art, be it literature, music, dance, theatre or the visual arts, engages our senses in such a way that it allows us to experience the world from a different point of view. I think exposure to art broadens our perspective and gives us a better appreciation for the different cultures in the world.

What's some of the best advice you've ever received?

Be careful about always following someone else’s advice. God gave you a brain, use it.

Who has had a significant impact on your life and why?

I would have to say the biggest influence on my life was my mother and father. Growing up my mother was a wonderful example of how to live a life of faith and the importance of practicing gratefulness.

My father, a career military officer and later teacher, taught me the value of planning, hard work and always giving your best in whatever you do. He also impressed upon me at an early age that freedom isn’t free.
