Mowell celebrates 50 years
Carl J. Mowell and Son Funeral Home is celebrating 50 years of service to families in Fayette County and the surrounding area.
C.J. Mowell started the business in 1964, and for the first 20 years, he and his family lived upstairs from the funeral home.
In addition to the original Fayetteville location, Carl J. Mowell and Son opened the Peachtree City chapel in 1985.
In its 50 years, the funeral home has served more than 8,500 families.
"One of the nice things about being part of the community for so long is the friendships you make and the people you meet,” said David Mowell, son of founder C.J. Mowell. "It's bittersweet a lot of times. You get to help them when their parents die. Now, I'm serving the people that I know when their parents and loved ones pass away, and it’s the same people that we served 25 years ago when their parents passed away.”
Though he was born in Clayton County, C.J. Mowell has spent a lifetime as part of Fayette County, building his business with his family and raising a family.
“We've got some memories here that you cherish," C.J. said. "Fayette County has been good to us… We appreciate people trusting us, and God has certainly blessed us. We look forward to serving for another 50 years."

Great Expressions offering free oral cancer screenings
Great Expressions Dental offices are offering free oral cancer screenings through the month of April.
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month.
“Oral cancer can easily go unnoticed in its early stages as it can be painless and physical changes might not be very noticeable,” said Dr. Lyda Harandi with Great Expressions Dental Centers. “Because this can be life-threatening, it’s extremely important to be proactive about the prevention of oral cancer and work to detect signs in the early stages of development. Prevention begins with knowing what to look for and being mindful of causes.”
The Newnan location of Great Expressions Dental Center is located on Bullsboro Drive.

Kroger raises more than $278,000 for MDA
Kroger’s Atlanta Division customers donated more than $278,000 from March 16-29 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The annual fundraiser encouraged Kroger customers to purchase $1 or $5 Shamrocks to help MDA send thousands of young patents to summer camps and provide comprehensive health care, medical equipment, support services and clinics to those affected by more than 40 forms of neuromuscular disease.
“Kroger remains one of the largest supporters of MDA’s efforts to provide much needed services and potentially life saving research to local families living with Muscular Dystrophy,” said MDA Area Director Angela Brown. “Kroger associates and their loyal and valued customers continue to inspire hope and it’s with their unyielding support each year that we are able to provide for those living with neuromuscular diseases.”
