International opportunities for Georgia companies

by Greg Wright, President, Coweta County Development Authority

Editor’s note: Coweta in Focus features views of several Newnan and Coweta community leaders.

Last month, the Coweta County Development Authority had the pleasure of sponsoring an important international program in Atlanta.

Georgia has international representatives in 11 markets: Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Columbia, Europe, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and the United Kingdom/Ireland.

Each year, the representatives spend a week in Georgia for internal training, for meetings with economic developers, and for visits with companies looking to expand in the global marketplace.

According to the Department of Economic Development, Georgia ranked as the 11th largest exporting state and the 8th leading importing state in 2013. A great deal of credit can go to these professionals who seek out international opportunities for Georgia companies. In addition, the representatives identify international companies that have a need to locate or expand their existing operations in Georgia, and they seek out international tourist groups that might be interested in a visit to Georgia.

Coweta County was very pleased to welcome Yumiko Nakazono, Georgia’s international representative in Japan, during her visit to the state. Created in 1973, the Japan office was the first of Georgia’s international offices and has been an important partner in Coweta County’s economic success. For example, the Japan office was a key player in the location of Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation to Coweta County in 1986.

During Yumiko’s visit to the county, she had the opportunity to meet with key leaders at Yamaha and at Yokogawa — two Coweta companies that continue to grow and provide quality jobs in our community.

We are very fortunate to live in a state that places such a strong emphasis on international trade and foreign direct investment, and we will continue to work with these valuable partners to promote the best Coweta County has to offer.
