What are some of the biggest changes you've seen in your industry since you first started?

I’ve had the great opportunity to work in this industry for over 20 years. It’s amazing to see the difference that technology has made in how we communicate with our customers. In most recent years, several tools have made it possible for customers to not only manage their account online, but also to monitor their own power usage and to stay informed about power outages. Also, I’ve seen changes in our generation mix. For the first time in 30 years there is an expansion in nuclear generation. Additionally, we continue to look for opportunities to embrace renewable energy sources as well.

What has been the best business lesson you've learned?

For me, I’ve learned the importance of truly understanding your work environment. I believe if you take the time to understand the environment in which you are working, including knowing the key decision makers and being aware of the unwritten rules, you will be successful. This approach has served me well over the years, not only in understanding my company’s work environment, but also the communities in which I’ve lived.

Who has inspired you the most over your career?

I have had an opportunity to work with some outstanding leaders. Those that I have admired have demonstrated a genuine caring for people. The leader who has inspired me the most is one that I’ve worked for at different times in my career. As a first level supervisor, this leader was always willing to help develop those around him. He wasn’t afraid to try new ways of doing things, in order to become more efficient and better serve our customers. Now as an executive, he continues to engage with employees and look for ways to make a difference.
